A Contest That Revealed Truth About the Freelancing Community

Graphic designing seems to be the easiest thing to do and to earn money, right? Well, it all depends on the creativity level, and the truth is, creativity is not a talent so you can’t teach it. It’s something built-in and it comes from within.

Qpro is the greatest community of Freelances, Designers and coders in Pakistan who thought to experiment on the market of the graphic designing industry of Pakistan and shared its statistics to spread awareness.

Experiment 101 – Idea Logo Ka

The experiment contest was designed for the entire population of Pakistan, that means 40% of the people were from Lahore and 60% from the rest of the cities. The people participated were of age group between 18 to 38 years and 21% were freshers, 11% were Beginners but 68% were professionals.
The most shocking part is to see that people 68% of people were professionals then why the results were disappointing? Let’s dissect the situation.

It has been analyzed that People from Pakistan tend to call themselves professional after studying course from Udemy or another online teaching website, jump into the freelancing directly, do 10-15 projects and call themselves professionals.

Let’s Clarify What Takes to Call Ourselves Professionals?

According to Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers, it takes the sweat equity to decide whether you’re a professional or not. On average, a person should give more than 10,000 hours in a particular skill to call himself something. It’s known as 10,000 hour-rule and it takes at least 10 years of practice. So, yes, the professional must differ from the freshers and the beginners because of the number of hours they give to their work overtime.

It’s This Because People from Pakistan Look for Shortcuts or Overnight Success?

Not necessarily, but let’s hope Qpro would conduct experiment 102 to open up another reality of the talent of Pakistan.

Yeah! We Gave Plenty of Time for The Submission

Some people would think the contest time must be limited that’s why the results were disappointing. Let’s check out the contest details and decide yourself:

It is easily visible from the above data that the registrations were started on 2015 September 2019 and closed at 7 October 2019, the submissions we're on 11th October 2019, so the people had 25 days to submit their designs. According to the statistics, if a freelancer especially a graphic designer gives an entire day for a single design then he must or should complete the design by maximum one week or 10 days. So, the contestants had plenty of time to come up with a great idea for this contest. Moreover, the results of this contest were announced on 19th October 19, therefore, the judges have analyzed the results properly and strategically to determine if we have up to the mark designs or not.

The Judges of The Contest

Unsatisfactory Results

Why there were more than 700 registrations but only 25% result? Most people registered in the contest just to be the winner or to get the prize money. We assume that most of them were beginners. They submitted their unthoughtful and less creative designs to try out their luck. But unfortunately, they got eliminated. Also, the most noticeable part is that 70% of the logos were copied. This explains that people like to minimum effort and want maximum results. But this actually wasn’t the minimum effort, the plagiarized content is the theft of intellectual property, so it’s a bad practice.

So, Where Do We Stand Internationally?

A bad reputation can destroy everything. Thanks to Qpro for conducting this experiment to create a check and balance in the procedure. This will promote that Pakistan also have a criterion for the talent even in freelancing & we just not secondarily do it for the money, but to contribute in the society based on our skills.

Pakistan constitutes 9% of the world freelancers and generates an income of 1 Billion US dollars.

Our neighboring country has 24% of the world freelancers and they generate an income of 400 Billion US dollars, this doesn’t seem even close. People give more projects to other countries because we stand a little bit less in talent.

The Typical Mindset of a Freelancer

  • Self-governance:
A freelancer is a highly independent person. Their self-governance stops them from learning anything new. It’s good to be a know it all, but it’s better to be an informative and knowledgeable person.
  • Money is Everything:
Yes! Money is important, but when it comes to the talent and the skills it’s secondary. Money is just the outcome and provides more access to you to the worldly things. Building your skills can make money to work for you.
  • Overnight Success:
A typical freelancer looks for more money, copy-pastes things, submit, earn money. They take more projects, works full time and just try to attain more money. The shortcuts won’t last & there is no rule for the overnight success.
  • Just Being Trendy
A typical freelancer looks for a trend takes the project, thinks that it would make him successful, instead, they must learn that interest and passion supersede trend.

Qpro’s Ultimate Guide for The Graphic Designers

Before entering into the freelance graphic designing career, a freelancer must ask the following questions:
  • What’s your vision?
Where do I see myself after 5 years? It is a typical question asked in the interview with the candidates. But freelancing on a lonely journey, an individual must be self-motivated and willing to work regularly with lots and lots of passion. So, the question, ‘Where do I see myself after 5 years ‘must be asked by the individual himself. He should create his own vision about the work. Most importantly, in the career of freelancing, an individual must self-monitor himself which is a very difficult task, which is why many freelancers tend to quit or lack the motivation that results in I'm doing fewer tasks, take minimal projects, and produce Bad quality work.
  • International Market horizon:
Many freelancers work nationally, and they don't consider the value of international market because they are not very skillful or talented and except himself due to lack of motivation which makes them not to leave their comfort zone. Every freelancer should have one thought in the mind that they should produce the work without any limitation. They should ask this one question that how should I survive in the international market? Without this question, they would never be able to touch the international market horizon which would result just in the form of limited success.
  • Growth mindset:
A freelancer should have a growth mindset and they should always focus on the high paying jobs. this mindset would allow them to take challenging work for themselves and ultimately, they would learn more about their skills.
  • Revenue generation:
This is the most required part of every job. every freelancer looks for a great revenue generation, but this is just a limited thought and they should figure out how they can contribute to a larger society by playing their part or role. They should not only limit themselves by doing the job rather they should check the future of the design industry of Pakistan. Furthermore, and if they want to do something more for their country, they should ask this question that what should I do to increase the revenue generation of Pakistan which would not only increase his revenue but would benefit the entire nation.
